Care Guide
Leather rewards a little attention. A few small habits keep a VANTORRI jacket looking better each season.
How leather ages
Genuine leather changes with wear: the colour deepens, creases settle in at the elbows and the surface takes a soft sheen. That is how a leather jacket is meant to age, not damage.
Care topics
- Wipe the leather with a soft, dry cloth after wearing, especially the collar and cuffs, where skin and oils collect.
- Hang it on a wide, shaped hanger so the shoulders keep their line. A thin wire hanger will mark them.
- Let it breathe for a day between long wears.
- Keep perfume, hand sanitiser and alcohol-based sprays off the surface.
- Dark denim and freshly dyed fabrics can transfer colour onto lighter leather. Take care with tan and cream shades.
- Condition once or twice a year, or when the leather starts to feel dry. Use a conditioner made for the finish of your jacket and test it first on a hidden spot, such as the inside of a hem.
- Apply a thin coat with a soft cloth, work it in with light circular strokes and let it rest overnight. More is not better: too much leaves the leather tacky.
- On a distressed finish, condition sparingly. The worn-in surface is part of the design and will deepen with wear on its own.
- Do not use household oils, petroleum jelly or furniture polish.
- Blot the water with a soft, dry cloth. Do not rub.
- Hang the jacket on a wide hanger and let it dry slowly at room temperature, away from radiators, hair-dryers and direct sun.
- Once fully dry, work the leather gently with your hands to soften it, and condition it lightly if it feels stiff.
- Blot a spill at once. Do not scrub, and do not use water on grease or ink.
- For a light surface mark, use a cloth that is barely damp, then dry straight away.
- For oil, ink or a deep stain, do not try home remedies. Take the jacket to a specialist leather cleaner.
- Wipe zips, snaps and buckles with a dry cloth.
- If a zip drags, rub a little candle wax or a zip lubricant along the teeth. Close it slowly, and never force it.
- Keep metal finishes away from perfume, salt and prolonged damp, which can dull them.
- Air the jacket inside out on a hanger now and then so the lining stays fresh.
- Do not machine-wash the jacket or the lining. Have the whole garment cleaned by a leather specialist when it needs it.
- Empty the pockets before storing it, so nothing stretches or marks the leather.
- Store it on a wide, padded hanger in a breathable cotton garment bag.
- Keep it in a cool, dry, dark place, out of direct sunlight, which fades and dries leather.
- Avoid plastic covers and damp cupboards. Leather needs to breathe.
- Do not fold it for long periods, and do not stuff it into a tight space.
